Bogotá

Bogotá is great outdoors, too

2 min read

Bogotá isn’t only culture and nightlife. Five plans to break the routine, get moving and breathe mountain air without leaving the city.

In this edition of Ahead Recommends we show you that Bogotá isn’t only culture and nightlife: outdoor plans are lived to the fullest here, too. If you miss nature, here are a few ways to escape the city’s pace for a while.

Hike up Monserrate

If you’ve been to Bogotá before, you probably know Monserrate, one of its iconic hills. At 3,152 meters, it offers a panoramic view of the city, a chapel, restaurants and souvenir shops.

Most people go up by cable car or funicular, but you can also hike it, and that’s the real challenge. If you like hiking and early starts, pack a water bottle and comfortable sportswear. We promise it’s worth it.

Sunday Ciclovía

On Sundays and public holidays, from 7:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Bogotá closes some of its main roads so people can walk, bike, skate or stroll with their dogs. It’s a safe space to exercise and see the city from a different angle.

Along the way you’ll find stands with street food like empanadas or salpicón, spots to fix your bike and water your dog, and even outdoor dance or cardio classes.

More than 120 kilometers of car-free roads, every Sunday.

Paintball

Bogotá has several paintball fields, the team sport where you knock out opponents with paint balls. It’s completely safe, and the adrenaline of moving across an open field is hard to beat. Here are 5 options recommended by Diners magazine (opens in a new tab) (in Spanish).

Boats on Simón Bolívar lake

Simón Bolívar Park is the city’s big park. One of the best things to do there is rent a pedal or row boat and sail its 10-hectare lake. Perfect for unplugging for a while with the people you love.

Go-karts

If speed is your thing, Bogotá also has karting tracks where you can floor it and fight for first place. A fun, different plan. Again, here are 5 tracks recommended by Diners magazine (opens in a new tab) (in Spanish).

Bonus: hiking the hills

We also invite you to hike Bogotá’s hills: the Eastern Hills, Quebrada La Vieja or the Las Moyas páramo. Solo, with friends or with family, there’s no excuse not to enjoy nature on your trip.
